INMERSIÓN LINGÜÍSTICA EN IRLANDA 

CURSO 2025-26

Del 16 al 22 de febrero, 32 alumnado de 4º ESO realizaron una inmersión lingüística en Malahide, Irlanda. Durante toda esa semana, los alumnos y alumnas tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir a clases impartidas por profesores nativos de la academia Irish College of English. Por las tardes, realizaron diferentes excursiones con el objetivo de visitar distintas partes de Irlanda y conocer su cultura y costumbres. 

Día 1: Llegada a Malahide. 

Después de un largo viaje desde Cacabelos, llegaron a Malahide, un tranquilo pueblo cerquita de la capital, Dublín. En este día los estudiantes fueron recogidos por sus familias de acogida y llevados a sus casas para darles la bienvenida e instalarse.  

Día 2: Academia y visita al castillo de Malahide.  

Por la mañana comenzaron las clases en la Irish College of English. Después de las clases y el almuerzo, comenzó su primera excursión. Pudieron recorrer las inmediaciones del bonito castillo de Malahide, donde realizaron una gymkhana en la que tenían que responder varias preguntas sobre el lugar y hacer diferentes retos para llevarse un premio. A continuación, pudieron adentrarse en el castillo con un tour guiado.  

Día 3: Tour por Dublín. 

En este día, después de las clases, los alumnos pudieron visitar la capital de Irlanda, Dublín. Disfrutaron de un tour por los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad (The Spire, el Ha'penny bridge, Temple bar...), y luego pudieron aprovechar para realizar algunas compras en Grafton Street. 

Día 4: National Museum en Dublín. 

Durante el cuarto día, volvieron a visitar Dublín, esta vez con el propósito de visitar una de las sedes del National Museum, donde pudieron aprender acerca de la historia de Irlanda. Después del museo pudieron volver a hacer compras y pasear por la ciudad. 

Día 5: Acantilados de Howth. 

Como no todo iba a ser ciudad, en este día los alumnos visitaron el pintoresco pueblo de Howth, donde pudieron hacer una pequeña ruta rodeando la costa del pueblo para admirar sus acantilados.  

Día 6: Glendalough. 

En su último día en Irlanda, los alumnos hicieron una ruta por Glendalough, donde pudieron visitar sus preciosos lagos y cascadas.

Día 7: Goodbye.

El último día fue de despedidas y regreso a Cacabelos. Se fueron cargados de recuerdos tras una semana que recordarán para siempre. 

Hi everyone! My name is Sean Murley, and I am the new auxiliar in the school. I am from a town called Valparaiso in the United States. My town is in the state of Indiana. I recently graduated from Purdue University in May this year.

I went to Valparaiso High School, where one of my sisters goes now. I have another sister who is studying at a private university. When I wasn´t living on campus, I lived with my mom, who is a teacher at an elementary school and my grandpa.

I am going to be helping out for the whole school year, and I have been helping out in the English classes and the bilingual classes of Physical Education and science.

This is my first time visiting Spain, and Europe in general, so I am excited to be here! I am living in Ponferrada, near the university, with three students.

I am really enjoying Ponferrada, and Spain in general so far. A lot is quite different: the food and times people eat, the architecture, the landscape. (There are a lot more bars and cafés around!) I am planning on visiting many places while I am here, both near and far. I have already been to León, Astorga and A Coruña, both of which I really enjoyed. There also aren´t any mountains close to my town, so I have enjoyed getting to do a bit of hiking!

Valparaiso has about 30,000 people, so it is smaller than Ponferrada, but bigger than a lot of the towns here. I live very close to Chicago, and when I arrived in Madrid I was a bit surprised at how different of a city it was to Chicago, which has a lot more tall, modern buildings. 

As I mentioned, the food culture here is quite different. In the U.S., often to save time we will get food delivered or go to a restaurant ourselves and get takeout. In general it seems people cook more here. The coffee in the U.S. is similar: a lot of people get it to-go (for example a lot of Starbucks have a drive-thru). Some people like going to cafés to work or study, but here it seems more common to spend a lot of time in cafés, especially since there are a lot more.

Things are also definitely a lot cheaper here. Depending on what you get coffee could be more than $5. One small thing I do miss about the U.S. is that water is free and you normally don´t have to ask for it at restaurants; they just give you an infinite amount of water. Also breakfast in the U.S., I sometimes go out to eat at diners with my family for breakfast, especially on the weekend, and most people don´t do that here.

There is one Spanish restaurant in my town though, (the chef is originally from Madrid) and I wanted to go to celebrate my graduation since I was planning on coming to Spain!

TALKS, GIG AND SCAVENGER HUNT

 Thomas, our dear language assistant, paid a visit to CRA La Abadía on 23^rd May and gave a talk to the students of Year 5 and 6 of Primary Education. 

An ordinary Monday became an exceptional one as the students learned about Australia, that faraway country which is almost antipodal to Spain. Those 18,000 kms make a difference. People speak a different language, which sometimes is not so easy to understand, because they have their own expressions and terms, which are neither British nor American.  Everyday life is also different because it is such a huge country that you might have to travel for two hours to get to the nearest supermarket. School life looks so appealing when we see the Australian students take part in so many sports events and get involved in such a wide range of practical subjects. Who wouldn’t love to hear the sounds of wildlife which we have only seen in documentaries? The laughing Kookaburra, cassowary, Koala, platypus… even though some of them might frighten us terribly like the Tasmanian devil. The students listened enthralled as Thomas told them stories about his life in those mysterious and exotic lands.

And jumping from one Monday to the other, on the 6^th June, Thomas made his way to CEIP Virgen de la V Angustia, where he also kept the students of Year 6 mesmerized throughout the two talks. They felt transported to the land of Kangaroos and wallabies and kept asking questions wondering if they could ever follow those nature trails through the bushes in Australia.

The day came when Thomas had to say goodbye and he did it in a fashionable way. He played the traditional bagpipes, which he had learned to play in Scotland. 

As the song says, Thomas left with the melody blowing in the wind. But you don’t have to worry, Thomas has not left Spain, so you may come across him any day.

Last but not least, on Tuesday 14^th June, under the supervision of Arantxa, Nacho and Élida, the students of Virgen de la V Angustia teamed up to find the most items in the Scavenger Hunt. They raced against time to find leaves, seeds, sticks, weeds, feathers, bugs, spider webs or butterflies. They competed but without spoiling the fun. The jury consisted of the unshakeable fun-loving students of 3º ESO in the bilingual programme, who demanded a picture as proof of each and every item they found. All the students had a great time in the park and we are looking forward to the next school year when they will be the youngest members of our  secondary school.

UK CULTURE CLASS

 

A member of the Teacher Training Department of Burlington Books visited our school on Tuesday, 15th March and gave the students of ESO an inspiring Culture Class about the UK. In the four sessions we learnt lots of interesting facts about this country.

The editorial has been offering these entertaining talks since February 2011 when Luke Roberts first came to our school exhibiting his typical British humour. He came back in May 2016 and he was  brilliant as usual. The following year he was replaced by the lovely American Tammy, who gave us several talks, in June and November 2017 and three years later in November 2020. Tammy gave really interesting talks about USA, UK and about a variety of English-speaking countries around the world.

This time we counted on a new performer, Damien Sheehy, to entertain and hold the attention of our young audience. This Irishman was full of beans and captivated us all with his energy and powerful voice, so we honestly enjoyed the experience.

The students who were challenged to reply to questions related to the UK culture were rewarded with a gift, the traditional limited-edition Burlingtonbooks ballpen.

We look forward to the next culture class.

FOMENTO DE LAS LENGUAS EXTRANJERAS CON LA VISITA DE ÉMILIE AL INSTITUTO

El jueves, 18 de marzo, y el miércoles, 21 de abril, visitó nuestro instituto Émilie Hahn, licenciada en estudios ingleses por la universidad de Estrasburgo (Francia), quien actualmente realiza sus prácticas de máster en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Ponferrada. 

Émilie colaboró activamente tanto con el departamento de francés como con el de inglés, realizando presentaciones en ambas lenguas sobre Estrasburgo y promoviendo la comprensión y expresión oral de nuestros alumnos en ambas lenguas. 

Nuestro alumnado preparó y le realizó algunas preguntas, sea en lengua inglesa o lengua francesa, para saber algo más sobre su región, sobre su recorrido académico, sus gustos, etc.

Tras el éxito de su primera visita entre el alumnado, ella misma se prestó voluntaria para una segunda. Esperamos que, como dice el refrán, no haya dos sin tres.

Intercambio lingüístico-cultural en inglés con un instituto de California

 Gracias a las nuevas tecnologías y a pesar de la actual situación de pandemia que nos impide viajar al extranjero, o poder beneficiarnos de alguno de los programas de auxiliares de conversación de nativos de habla inglesa en el centro, tan necesarios para mejorar las destrezas orales de los estudiantes, el departamento de inglés del Ies Bergidum Flavium ha iniciado un proyecto de intercambio lingüístico-cultural con alumnos americanos que aprenden español en un instituto de Santa Mónica, el St. Monica Catholic High-School, en California (EEUU), con carácter virtual. Para ello estamos haciendo uso de la herramienta de aprendizaje online, Flipgrid, que nos proporciona la Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León. 

Flipgrid cuenta con un programa de intercambio, denominado Gridpals, que permite poner en contacto profesores de cualquier materia y edad de todo el mundo a través de vídeos. Esta herramienta permite al profesor plantear una pregunta y a los alumnos contestar de manera oral a través de vídeos. A su vez, los alumnos pueden comentar esos vídeos con otros vídeos, utilidad que permite el intercambio. Es importante señalar que los vídeos únicamente son accesibles al profesorado y a los alumnos que participan en el intercambio y que los vídeos son moderados por las profesoras que, en cualquier momento, pueden ser eliminados. 

De momento, el intercambio está funcionando con el éxito esperado, fomentando el uso y mejora de todas las destrezas de la lengua inglesa (reading, writing, listening and speaking) en un contexto auténtico, pues los alumnos deben buscar información sobre distintos aspectos culturales de España y contársela en inglés a los estudiantes americanos.

AROUND THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD

 

On Wednesday 4th November, despite all  the restrictions that keep us confined to our classrooms, sitting apart  in order to keep the required safety social distance, and wearing our masks, which are now our daily uniform, we welcomed Tammy to IES Bergidum Flavium. She lives in Galicia, but she was born in USA. I guess some of you still remember her because this is not her first visit. Tammy is a Burlington English trainer and she came to our school to give us a Culture Talk in 2017, especifically on 6th June.

It was only three years ago, yet the situation was quite different.  What academic year were you in? You were three years younger and since then things have changed a lot. Back then, another visitor was also here. Do you remember Andee Kaluzna, the American volunteer from Illinois? She spent the third term with us, just like Elizabeth from Arizona had done in the second term. Well, am I getting nostalgic? Perhaps it’s because these teachers opened a window to the outside world, which is not so easy these days with the mobility restrictions. We are in a State of Alarm and  although we are not on lockdown, at least not yet, we are under nighttime curfew, so we don’t feel quite at ease. We know we are not alone in our villages and English is a wonderful tool that enables us to communicate with people worldwide. The pandemic may give us a feeling of isolation, but on the other hand, it makes us well aware of how all human beings are connected and affected by the same problems. Therefore, let’s take advantage of this universal language. Let’s learn English so that all together, regardless of the country where we were born, can come out with brilliant ideas that help us work out solutions to the current issues. Learn and share your knowledge, you will need it in the future. It’s in our power to make a better world and it’s also our responsibility.

Tammy gave the students in the first year of Bachillerato a humorous but informative talk on some cultural and linguistic curiosities. She took us on a trip Around the English-Speaking World and we stopped off at different countries such as England, Scotland, Ireland, USA, Australia and South Africa. 

Just to give an example, we learned that Prince Charles is not a hare, but the heir to the British throne, though he might be thrown to the air by his son with no hair. Gosh, I think I’m putting my foot in it. Anyway, Tammy was delighted to see the students were knowledgeable about the English-speaking countries and she is looking forward to coming back next year. The next day she sent the students a few questions to check they had been paying attention during her talk. But had they? Yes, of course. The students are willing to learn. What about you? ONLY HUMAN

Once upon a time long before we were on Coronavirus lockdown...on Friday 25th October the English theatre company "Moving On" came to Cacabelos to perform the entertaining interactive play Only Human to an audience of eager students of the primary and secondary schools in the village.

Only Human told us the personal and human story of two old friends, Bob and Harry who had grown apart and hadn't seen each other in ten years.  

Bob had just arrived at Harry's Ice Cream Parlour. They tried to boast about their achievements in life.

Harry pretended to be the owner, the boss and the top manager of the successful Ice Cream Parlour and Gelateria. 

He denied working there. He claimed he just counted the money because he was the chief administrator and he didn't need to work because he was immensely rich...

but as a matter of fact he was only a poor man trying to survive in a world taken over by machines and robots.

Thanks to the students who turned out to be first-rate actors and who made us enjoy this wonderful show with no previous rehearsals.

SEMANA DE INMERSIÓN EN GALES

El destino de nuestros 31 alumnos de 3º y 4º ESO este curso es el norte de Gales.

Salimos de Cacabelos a las 4 am del sábado 22 de febrero para dirigirnos al aeropuerto de Oporto.

 El vuelo salió a las 10.00 y llegamos a Manchester a las 12.30. La directora de la escuela English Plus , Kath Milburn, nos vino a recoger y el autobús puso rumbo a la ciudad de Prestatyn.

Tuvimos una primera toma de contacto con la localidad recorriendo la calle principal bajo una ligera llovizna.

Dos horas más tarde las familias anfitrionas pasaron a recoger a nuestros alumnos y todos nos fuimos felices para casa viendo la emoción en sus caras.

Nuestro segundo día, domingo 23, comenzó con la visita a la ciudad de Chester. 

Nuestra guía, Karen, nos llevó a través del centro comercial Grosvenor hasta The Cross, el crucero situado en la intersección de las vías principales.

Desde aquí la guía nos dio tiempo libre para explorar  el centro de la ciudad hasta la hora de comer.

Comimos dentro del museo en una sala habilitada para ello  antes de comenzar la visita.

Después de esta visita  al museo Grosvenor nos dirigimos a recorrer la muralla romana que rodea la ciudad desde la que se puede contemplar el río Dee.

Seguidamente nos dirigimos a visitar el anfiteatro romano.

Continuamos con la visita al famoso reloj Eastgate Clock de Chester.

Seguimos con un paseo alrededor de la catedral.

Finalmente, los alumnos dispusieron de algún tiempo libre para recorrer las calles principales y despedirse de  The Rows de Chester.

Hoy Lunes día 24 comenzamos las clases a las 8:30  con los alumnos divididos en dos grupos, con sus respectivos profesores, Joe y Margaret. Al finalizarlas cominos en la escuela a las12:30.

A continuación nos dirigimos al centro de la ciudad de Rhyl para comenzar las actividades de la tarde: Treasure Trail  y Tag Active.
La primera actividad consistía en resolver un cuestionario preguntando a la gente en la calle para poder descifrar la palabra clave. Esa palabra era "por favor " en Galés (=OS GWELWCH YN DDA).
Las ganadoras de la actividad fueron: Lola, Carla, Sofía y Arancha.

Y si todos lograban pronunciar en la cafetería la palabra mágica obtenían sus bebidas gratis.

Seguidamente nos fuimos a un centro de ocio.

Aquí los alumnos en dos grupos se retaron con dos juegos: "Tag Cyber Tower" y "Tag Active".

Sofía fué la ganadora de la primera con 36,85 segundos y Adrián L. de la segunda con 81 toques y 9.150 puntos.

Después de una tarde intensa regresamos con nuestras familias.
Hoy martes 25 seguimos con el mismo plan de actividades: clases por la mañana, la comida y actividades lúdico-deportivas por la tarde.

Durante la comida los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de probar los tradicionales pancakes con azúcar y limón, ya que era "Pancake Day".
A continuación empezamos con el Drama Workshop: Este taller consistió en la realización de distintos juegos bajo la dirección de Stuart.

Seguidamente nos dirigimos al  polideportivo Oak tree centre, donde recibimos lecciones de rugby.

Finalmente Hellen Duke cerró la sesión con unos ejercicios de relajación.

Y con estos ejercicios acabamos las actividades de la tarde y fuimos a batirnos con el gélido viento de Gales.
El miércoles 26 tuvimos una invitada especial en el transcurso de nuestras clases: la alcaldesa de Rhyl, Ellie Chard.

Hoy el descanso fue más corto y adelantamos la hora del almuerzo para ir a visitar el castillo de Conwy, construido por Eduardo I en el siglo XIII durante la conquista de Gales.

Las vistas desde el castillo, que está clasificado Patrimonio de la Humanidad, son espectaculares.

 Desde la torre pudimos contemplar las estancias del castillo y el río Conwy, que junto con las dobles

murallas hacían al castillo inexpugnable.

                       Adosada a la muralla que rodea la ciudad contemplamos la casa más pequeña de Gran Bretaña, como Rafael bien pudo comprobar.

El autobús nos trasladó a Llandudno, una ciudad costera vacacional llena de hoteles y cafés.

Después de  estas interesantes visitas en una tarde soleada cogimos el autobús de regreso al hogar

con nuestras familias de acogida.
En nuestro último día, jueves 27, después de las clases matutinas, visitamos el instituto de Prestatyn.

Nuestros alumnos se reunieron con los alumnos que estudian español y todos juntos realizaron una

actividad preparada por la profesora de español que consistió en  intercambiar información personal utilizando los dos idiomas.

La comida tuvo lugar en el propio centro. Tras la despedida de profesores y alumnos, éstos tuvieron algún tiempo libre y a continuación nos dirigimos a la bolera.

Tres alumnas del instituto se acercaron a compartir la tarde con nosotros, como se les había ofrecido en el centro, y así establecer nuevos contactos.

Así concluye nuestra Culture Week en Wales y hoy, viernes 28, regresamos a Cacabelos vía Liverpool-Oporto.

Un simpático piloto argentino nos invitó a conocer la cabina tras aterrizar en suelo portugués.

A las 21.30 las familias recogieron a nuestros alumnos, que aunque estuvieron encantados de vivir nuevas aventuras ya estaban deseando regresar a casa.
 Así que ... hasta pronto, el lunes volvemos a vernos "see you soon" o como ellos dicen en galés:
